On April 21, 28-year-old transgender woman Chayviss ‘Chay’ Reed was shot and killed in Miami. She is the 11th transgender person reported murdered so far in 2017. All eleven victims have been people of color, and ten were women.
Initial reports misgendered Chayviss, a common occurrence in law enforcement and media reports on transgender folks.
Many of Chayviss’ friends met her through the Homestead Job Corps Center in Florida, an education readiness program. Patina Peterson, who met Chayviss through the program in 2008, told Mic: “She was a light, always trying to make everyone around her happy.”
2017 is on track to be the deadliest year on record for transgender Americans. 2016, the current deadliest, saw 27 reported murders of transgender Americans. Most victims of anti-trans violence are trans women of color. According to a Mic analysis of FBI homicide data: “If in 2015 all Americans had the same risk of murder as young black trans women there would have been 120,087 murders instead of 15,696 murders.”
The actual rates of violence against trans folks are likely far higher than what is reported, as law enforcement and media frequently misgender trans folks, as they did with Chayviss.
